One of the best social networks / discovery engine for bloggers, and online businesses is Pinterest. The numbers of the network are very interesting:
- 175 million of monthly active users
- 75 million are from the US
- +50 billion Pinterest pins
- +1 billion Pinterest Boards
- Market value of the company: $11 Billion+
- 81% of Pinterest users are women
- Millennials use Pinterest as much as Instagram
- New Signups: 40% Men – 60% Women
- 7% of total pins are from Men
- Average time spent on Pinterest per visit is 14.2 minutes
- There are more than 1.7 billion recipe Pins
So here some simple ways to increase your number of followers.
1- Make it easy for people to follow
One obvious way is to include a Pinterest button on your website or blog. Also don’t forget to include links to your Pinterest profile on other social networks such as Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Quora, Linkedin, and so on.
Don’t forget to insert social share buttons, so people can share your pins on Pinterest. One excellent way of doing this is using Social Warfare, a WordPress plugin that adds beautiful, lightning-fast social share buttons to your website or blog.
2- Pay attention to others
Follow the boards of your competitors. Look at their strategy, and understand what’s working (or not) in terms of options to build nice and viral pins. Watch carefully how they write the description, what hashtags they use, and what type of boards are more successful.
3- Optimal Pin Size
Here the opinions are really different. I’ve been searching for the perfect answer, and apparently it doesn’t exist. Frequently I see 735 x 1102 px. Others say 800 x 1422 px. Personally when I want a long pin, I go with 735 x 1500 px. The quality seems perfect, and there’s no compression that effects the quality of the pin.
One thing all agree the pin image must be longer than it is wide.
4- Use Beautiful Images
As we are talking about a visual social network. So a awesome images will get you far. As we all know a picture is worth a thousand words, and if you choose wisely, it will worth a thousand repins.
Here you have some websites with beautiful Photos:
5- Get your Profile right!
Explain in a simple way what are you doing. How are you planning to help. Don’t forget to insert the link of your blog or online business. Also I’m a strong supporter of using the same profile picture/image/logo on all our social media profiles. That way people will start associating that image, making it more easily to recognize.
6- Comment, Repin.
Focus on popular pins. For 2 reasons: 1) They probably have top value, because a lot of people is sharing; 2) You will be known as person that shares valuable content.
Also comment on popular pins. Don’t spam. Write meaningful comments, and people will start to recognize you, and eventually follow.
7- Join Collaborative Boards
Find popular group boards that have a large number of followers, ask the owners if you can collaborate with them. Follow all the rules, rigorously. Next every time that you share one pin, every follower of that board can potentially see it. Free and huge amounts of traffic will come your way. Be prepared.
